The brain benefits last a lot longer than you think, even into future generations via epigenetic changes.

There is an abundance of evidence demonstrating both the physical and cognitive benefits of physical activity. What I am excited to share with you today is research suggesting that the benefits may last a lot longer than you think. Future generations may reap benefits too.

Your brain can change over time in response to experiences, in a process known as neural plasticity. Get some exercise, and you may increase your brain’s adaptability. Researchers recently showed that exercise increased neural plasticity among older adults. They determined this by measuring blood levels of three markers of thought to be associated with the cognitive benefits of physical activity:

Publishing in Brain, Behavior, and Immunity in 2013, researchers examined how a randomized one-year aerobic exercise program for healthy older adults would affect the levels of the substances described above. This study represents the first to show the association between exercise-related brain connectivity changes (in an area known as the temporal cortex) and beneficial changes in IGF-1, VEGF, and BDNF.

We know that exercise has innumerable benefits in the psychological realm. Improve your brain function and behavior and decrease the probability of neuropsychiatric disease. Fortunately, you may not only benefit yourself, but so-called epigenetic changes in your DNA may offer these benefits to your future generations.
