We have all had that first date. Sitting across from each other, hearing them talk endlessly about themselves. There are no questions, no back and forth banter; it’s just an ego show.

More and more brands have made social media and digital a regular part of their marketing mix, but they haven’t necessarily embraced best practices. They haven’t stopped using it as a broadcast channel like a tv commercial or a billboard. The thing is, social media isn’t a billboard. It’s a conversation, whether you choose to talk about something other than yourself.

Social media is now the front line. The first place your current and potential audience sees your news, your latest offering, or your post about #NationalDogDay. It’s also their first spot to get your attention. Whether it’s out of frustration or praise, your fans online expect to get your attention. @ ing the brand that has made or ruined their day is one of the first moves. Waiting for you to fix the situation or love them back, those remarks go out into the universe, hoping that the conversation I mentioned earlier happens. In so many cases, the mention is ignored or simply remains unseen, leaving the opportunity for others to commiserate with their bad news or a superfan to realize they weren’t noticed.

When you take the time to listen to your audience and learn about them, you have the foundational insights to provide better UX, customer care, and content. Your content won’t just be good. It will resonate. It will feel like it was meant for them.
