Lessons learned teaching in China

You may not know who I am, but if you’ve read my stories on Medium — you’ve probably figured out that I live and work in China.

I came to China after working on an American cruise ship that ported in Shanghai during its Asian voyages. After two years on that ship I became addicted to China, so leaving that ship meant being torn away from the country I’d come to love.

After completing two contracts, I left the ship and moved to New Zealand. I survived there by living off small acting parts and Uber driving. While teaching an acting workshop for teenagers, I off-handedly moaned about missing Shanghai.

One well-timed moan turned into a chain of recommendations that ended up with me moving back in my beloved city.

Two years and a lot of life lessons later, I’m now the person that finds the expats to fill jobs in Shanghai.

Along this winding journey, I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to make the move to China successful, so I’m here to quell some expectations.

China is nothing like what you’re used to, and I can say that with confidence despite having no idea where you’re from.

Even if you’re from elsewhere in Asia, it’s a whole different world once you’ve entered The Mainland.

If you’re going to make the move, you have to be ready for everything to feel radically different. Sometimes for good, sometimes for bad.

A very positive change will be access.

Every type of food and consumer product is suddenly at your fingertips and available as soon as you want it. Anything can be shipped to you from anywhere, and at rock bottom prices.
Getting use to the low cost of living will be an easy change to make.

There are plenty of downsides however.
