We Need to Talk About Death and Dying

It’s the only way to prepare for the inevitable

If there is one thing we all know about life on earth it’s that it ends in death. Every one of us knows we are going to die. The things we don’t know about our inevitable death are its timing and method of execution.

Death is often a traumatic experience for those around the person dying. Often, that trauma is caused by our lack of preparation for the only known certainty of life.

Every year we spend time preparing for that other unavoidable aspect of life: taxes. But, when was the last time you talked about death and dying with your partner and children? They’re the ones who will have to deal with the reality of your death and they may end up being intimately involved in your dying. Talking about it beforehand helps everyone involved prepare for the event of your death, and it will help them cope when it occurs.

Many of us make a will. We think about the financial implications of our death. But, have you thought about what you’d like to happen or how you’d like to be treated in the event of a serious accident or terminal illness? Have you arranged for someone to make medical decisions on your behalf when you can no longer make them for yourself? Do you have any preferences for where you’d like to live when you can no longer take care of yourself or for arranging your funeral? Have you written any of this down? Have you discussed it with those who need to know?

It doesn’t matter how far you think the moment of your death may be in the future. None of us know the timing of our own death. It could be ten or fifty years away — or it could be tomorrow. If we’ve learnt anything from 2020, it’s that none of us are immune to a sudden and unexpected…
