What makes the product successful?

GroupMe has risen to popularity by creating a barrier between the social aspects of direct text messages and more professional/formal methods of communicating. GroupMe has made creating and communicating between groups of people more convenient than ever. It has allowed people to interact on a worldwide level without facing extra cost. The app, similar to any other app, provides standard messaging features such as direct messaging and media attachments. The application also allows for users to communicate on any mobile device or computer. It’s very easy to navigate and manage several different groups while maintaining a simple, easy-to-use interface.

What did they get right?

GroupMe has facilitated a universal platform where companies, student groups, families, etc. are able to message with each other. GroupMe has been essential to most on-boarding processes since it is easy to add new members to group messages. Once members are added to the chat, different members are able to contact individuals directly via direct messaging as well as communicate with the group as a whole. With the direct messaging feature, GroupMe allows users to see automatic read receipts as well.

Another successful GroupMe feature is its ability to locate phone numbers from the users “Contacts” and add them to their GroupMe directory. GroupMe also can connect to a user’s Facebook account. This is helpful when creating large group chats with individuals who the user is already connected with. Since GroupMe is available via the web, users do not need to download the app and will still receive messages from their groups.

GroupMe has also created a poll feature in which users can easily create and share a poll to a group chat, and everyone in the group-chat can respond and view the poll’s results. This feature is very effective in allowing a large group to make quick democratic decisions together, whether it be for choosing a date for a time to meet up or deciding which of anything is most popular among the group.

Additionally, a user has control over their notification settings and has the ability to make notifications much less disruptive than text notifications. Everyone knows how annoying it is to be a part of a big iMessage chain and constantly receive unwanted notifications. GroupMe’s notifications are more subtle or can be turned off completely. GroupMe got this right because as a result, users are able to separate themselves from ordinary text messages, often more personal and to-the-point. GroupMe has made themselves the perfect platform for group projects, work teams, orientation groups, clubs, sports teams, and more to effectively share information and discuss within a group.

How did the people behind this product think about this idea?

GroupMe was created in response to the lack of a universal group messaging system that works across a host of different devices such as Android, iPhone, etc. GroupMe uses the benefits of group messaging that is available in Instagram, Facebook, and iMessage, and takes it a step further by allowing for larger groups such as clubs, societies, classes, etc. GroupMe was invented to allow for these larger groups to function and communicate without restrictions to size which is a common problem in other apps. Additionally, the app is free which makes it as accessible as its other counterparts.
