R 4 kidding me?

Most of you have probably been through one job interview at least. So you know the mixture of motivation and apprehension grapping hold of your body and mind.

All the questions, like “what to wear", “how to get there", and “what can they possibly ask"? I am interviewing quite a bit these days, and I can’t say there has been one encounter that didn’t leave me at least a little bit uneasy.

But there are some that really stand out. And they are those where both parties can’t seem to speak about money in a straightforward, thought-through manner. I think I’ve actually gotten much better in this discipline. But then: if hiring managers know my background, put more prospective responsibilities on the table than I can possibly handle, and then say: “We can pax max half of what you demanded, and it will also fixed term til around Christmas! And by the way: our projects are really on the line right now!” ?

There are two possible reactions that come to my mind: “Would you say that to a male if my career level, too?” — minor issue. And: ”You must be kidding!” The latter I also say — a bit more nicely packaged — in my feedback to their offer. If — and that’s a big IF — that offer ever comes.
