The Importance of School Choice Programs in Quality Education

As described by a Californian public school teacher in a Prager University video series, school choice programs have a vital role in enabling parents to decide whether they want their children to receive a private, charter, public, or homeschool education.

A study at the University of Arkansas portrayed a situation in which students participating in such programs experienced significant increases in math and reading scores. A core issue was that teachers’ unions prevented accountability from being taken for low test results within the public school system. Restrictive layoff and tenure rules also presented a significant obstacle in the way of free school choice, with the parents left out of the government-defined equation as to where their children would attend school.
